The Osa Peninsula
This area is best visited during the dry season. It is the largest remaining coastal rainforest and has been kept pristine, but go soon, as they are now building roads in the Osa. Corcovado National Park is a very intense rainforest and should be seen with a good naturalist guide. There are several great lodges in the area that have resident guides and tours to the park are available from the lodge. Located 10 miles off the coast is the Caņo Island Biological Reserve. A worthwhile visit for some of the best snorkeling and diving in the country. Caņo is a fully protected natural paradise with an exceptionally beautiful reef bordering its shores. With depths ranging from 15 to 70 feet, these reefs offer an incredible diversity of fish life and marine creatures, including Mantas, Whitetip Reef Sharks, Whale Sharks, schools of jacks and sea snakes. Getting to the Pacific side of the Osa entails flying and then taking a boat taxi to the lodges or on the Gulfo Dulce side there are roads to the lodges from Puerto Jimenez or Golfito.
