The Hotel Fonda Vela is dedicated to the ideas of eco-tourism, tourism in harmony with the earth. The Latin room of Fonda means place of rest or nourishment after a long journey. Vela, or candle, for us represents service and good faith. To this a peaceful atmosphere is added that is sensitive to the local ecosystem. Run by two brothers who grew up on the property, the hotel's goal is to promote a greater understanding of the environment and encourage visitors to experience this unique habitat.

The Fonda Vela is located in the Monteverde community and like the first Quaker settlers, promotes the ideas of peace and friendship.

We hope you enjoy your stay in rustic comfort at the Fonda Vela Hotel and visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest which is only a short hike from our cabins in the heart of the Monteverde community.

Nature is the most profound gift the Fonda has to offer. Situated on the continental divide our property is home to some sixty different specias of migrating birds spotted by the many bird watchers who stay with us. Most sought after and often seen are the resplendant Quetzal, the Blue crowned Motmot, the American Swallow-tailed Kife that come to feed at our two small fresh water ponds, and a great variety of hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and raptors. On a botanical level, virgin rainforest and lush green fields with trails for nature lovers surround our hotel. We also have a garden which nurtures both tropical flowers and medicinal herbs such as mint, aloe and confrey. Another environmental focus is the ongoing eforestation project on the property. In compensation for tree removal for construction, our project concentrates on planting Costa Rican native trees. This is just one example of our goal to give back to nature what we have taken from her.

New wooden building have been built along the mountainside and surrounded by gardens, birds and sunlight. Rooms are oversized, beautifully furnished, and include large private baths with hot water. Each one is designed with the environment in mind, and large windows help to bring the outdoors inside. We also have a conference hall, a lounge an art gallery and our stables. Our restaurant prepares authentic Costa Rican internal meals which you can enjoy in the sun-lit dining room or on the balcony. We have an organic garden, and prepare meals with your good health in mind. It is our hope that while you stay with us at Fonda Vela both your mind and body will be rejuvenated.
